Explanation of Feynman’s paradox concerning low-pass filters

چکیده

In Feynman’s lectures there is a remark about the limiting value of the impedance of an n-section ladder consisting of purely reactive elements (capacitances and inductances). The remark is that the limiting impedance z = limn→∞ zn has a positive real part. He notes that this is surprising since the real part of each zn is zero, therefore it is impossible for the limit to have a positive real part. We explain the paradox, give the rate of convergence of the infinite sequence zn, calculate the speed at which energy is propagated out into the infinite ladder, and comment on some of the literature on this topic.

Utilization of an optimum low-pass filter during filtered back-projection in the reconstruction of single photon emission computed tomography images of small structures

Introduction:Low-pass filters eliminate noise, and accordingly improve the quality of filtered back-projection (FBP) in the reconstruction of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images. This study aimed at selection of an optimum low-pass filter for FBP reconstruction of SPECT images of small structures. Material and Methods:Sp...

Improving the Performance of ICA Algorithm for fMRI Simulated Data Analysis Using Temporal and Spatial Filters in the Preprocessing Phase

Introduction: The accuracy of analyzing Functional MRI (fMRI) data is usually decreases in the presence of noise and artifact sources. A common solution in for analyzing fMRI data having high noise is to use suitable preprocessing methods with the aim of data denoising. Some effects of preprocessing methods on the parametric methods such as general linear model (GLM) have previously been evalua...

Sensorless Commutation of BLDC Motor without Low Pass Filter and Phase Shifter

In this paper, a novel sensorless commutation method for BLDC motors is presented to simultaneously eliminate phase shifter and low-pass filter. An analytical model of the motor is presented and ripples resulted from the current commutation are investigated in detail. By detecting the zero crossing points of the unfiltered voltages of the motor terminals referred to the ground and DC link, the...

Performance Comparison of Gaussian and Elliptic High Pass Filter

In this paper, Gaussian and elliptic high pass filters are analyzed for image sharpening qualitatively and quantatively . The filters are implemented in frequency domain using matlab software. Experiments are performed to compare the performance of both the filters ,processed images are presented. The results demonstrate that elliptic yields better results.
